Sciatic pain is typically experienced from low back to behind the thighs and extending down below the knee. It is characterized by tenderness and pain in leg and thigh. Various factors are responsible for the sciatic pain. For appropriate treatment, we should first find out the causes of sciatic pain.

Sciatic pain is mainly caused by irritation of roots of the lumbosacral and lower lumbar spine. Some most common causes of sciatic pain are as follows:

Narrowing of the spinal canal in the lower back (lumbar spinal stenosis)

Degenerative disc disease which causes breakdown of discs that act as a cushion between the vertebrae

Lumbar herniated disc

Spondylolisthesis

Lumbar herniated disc results from extrusion of nucleus pulposus of the disc through annulus. A herniated disc is also known as slipped disk, protruding disc, ruptured disk, pinched nerve or bulging disc. Sciatic pain is one of the most common symptoms of lumbar herniated disc.

Lumbar spinal stenosis can give rise to sciatic pain because of narrowing of spinal canal. This condition is more common in adults above the age of 60. It typically originates from the overgrowth of soft tissue, enlarged facet joints and bulging disc placing pressure on the nerve roots.

Degenerative disc disease is one of the most common causes of sciatic pain. Degeneration of disc is a natural process that is related with aging. In some cases, one or more degenerated discs can cause irritation of a nerve root, which can lead to sciatic pain.

Isthmic spondylolisthesis is caused by slipping forward of one vertebra on another due to a small stress fracture. With a combination of fracture, disc space collapse and vertebral body slipping forward, the nerve may get pinched causing sciatic pain. An irritation of sciatic nerve may be due to piriformis syndrome. If piriformis muscle pinches or irritates, a nerve root that consists of sciatic nerve can cause sciatica-type pain. Sacroiliac joint dysfunction can lead to irritation of sacroiliac joint at the bottom of spine. It can give rise to irritation of L5 nerve which lies on the top of sacroiliac joint. Irritation of L5 nerve can can cause sciatica-type pain.

Sciatic pain can also be caused by direct nerve compression resulting from external forces to sacral spinal or lumbar nerve roots. It may be due to falling down, motor vehicle accidents, football and other sports. The impact can injure the nerves or sometimes fragments of broken bone can cause compression of the nerves.

Spinal tumors can be one of the important causes of sciatic pain. If spinal tumor develops in the lumbar region, there is a risk of nerve compression and development of sciatic pain. Lumbar subluxation means the altered position of vertebra in lower back. There may be function loss due to this condition that may result in sciatic pain.

Other possible reasons that may give rise to sciatic pain are:

overweight

wearing high heels

lack of regular exercise

sleeping on too soft mattress

Some common symptoms of sciatic pain are pain in leg or rear that may worsen when sitting, tingling or burning down the leg. Patient with sciatic pain may experience numbness, weakness in leg or difficulty in moving foot or leg. There may be a constant pain on one side of the rear. Diagnosis of sciatic pain is made with the help of MRI or CT scan. Various medications like muscle relaxants and analgesics are prescribed to treat the sciatic pain.

Causes of Sciatic Pain is a post from: Back Pain and Physical Therapy Guide

Exercises For Sciatic Pain

Sciatica

Exercises

Lower Spine

Nerves

Physiotherapist

Sciatic Pain

Sciatic pain is a condition that is caused by irritation or compression of one or more nerves that exist in your lower spine. This pain moves down your leg and is accompanied by weakness, numbness or tingling. It typically causes pain in the lower back, which renders the affected person unable to perform normal activities. Sciatic pain needs prompt medical attention to avoid any further complications. If you want a relief from sciatic pain, then you should opt for some exercises for sciatic pain.

Exercises for sciatic pain can definitely provide you some relief from the pain. Sciatica exercises are extremely useful as they can help to strengthen the back muscles. Appropriate types of back exercises can be helpful in managing sciatic pain. These exercises may play a significant role in keeping your back strong and healthy.

Some say that bed rest is a better way to treat sciatic pain. This is not completely true as resting can give only a temporary relief. After some days, pain may aggravate because of your inactive state. The back muscles may start to lose their strength and you may find it difficult to support your back. Idleness can only worsen your leg and back pain.

Doing restricted movement can weaken your back and may lead to chronic back pain. Carrying out proper exercises is very important for your spine as it keeps the discs healthy. These exercises ensure that the discs that are within the spine get the fluids and nutrients that will help them to stay healthy and fit.

Stretching exercises are more commonly recommended for treating the sciatic pain. Stretching exercises can help make the tight back muscles more flexible.

Hamstring stretching exercises is another effective treatment for sciatic pain. Hamstrings are the muscles that are situated in the back of your thigh. These muscles help to bend the knee properly.

You can also consult an exercise expert to know more about exercises for sciatic pain. These exercises are much better than your bed rest.

Exercises for sciatic pain play a key role in speeding up your recovery process. These exercises allow you to continue your normal routine without bothering much about sciatic pain. People suffering from back pain include piriformis stretch, crocodile twist and passive back arch.

Piriformis stretch involves sitting on the chair and placing your left ankle on your right leg that is above the knee:

You then have to lean forward.

Remain in this position for thirty seconds

Repeat the same procedure on other side.

This form of stretching can reduce your back pain. Before starting any exercise for sciatic pain, a correct diagnosis of sciatic pain is very essential. If you are feeling uncomfortable while doing the exercises, then immediately stop the exercise

You can also seek the help of physiotherapist if you are not sure about the exercises that you should perform. It is necessary to warm up your body before you begin your exercise. Thus, the exercises for sciatic pain can be a good option to keep your sciatic pain in control.

Exercises For Sciatic Pain is a post from: Back Pain and Physical Therapy Guide

Facts About Sciatic Pain

Sciatica

Medications

Patients

Piriformis Muscle

Sciatic Nerve

Sciatic Pain

Sciatica pain is a condition that, simply put, does not allow you to perform daily activities. In a nutshell, patients suffering from sciatic pain find it difficult to walk. So it is important for you to manage sciatic pain before it aggravates further.

Knowing about the facts of sciatic pain can give a clear idea about what to expect in this condition. You tend to experience sciatic pain when undue pressure is placed on the sciatic nerve by piriformis muscle. Muscle imbalances pull pelvis and hip joints out of place which tightens and shortens the piriformis muscle. This change of position can impart pressure on your sciatic nerve.

When a muscle in any body part overpowers its opposing muscles, then it can lead to muscle imbalance due to which your bones and joints experience constant stress. One more fact about sciatica pain is that no amount of electric stimulation, cortisone injections, medications, chiropractic adjustments or general exercises can correct the muscle imbalances that are responsible for creating sciatic pain.

Facts of sciatic pain can help you to decide a proper treatment plan for the sciatic pain:

There are number of pain relief products available in the market for sciatic pain.

If you want immediate relief from sciatic pain, then application of ice on the infected area is suggested.

Application of ice can lessen the swelling and reduce the inflammation.

However, it can give you a temporary relief. Therefore, it is better to consult the doctor as early s possible. Some oral medications are prescribed by the doctor that can help to ease the pain and offer more comfort.

Depending on the severity of inflammation, the doctor may first try to reduce your swelling and then may go for invasive surgery to remove the pressure that is on sciatic nerve. It is very important for you that you should follow the doctor’s instructions. The doctor may advice you to avoid any kind of strenuous physical activity that can cause the back pain, for a stipulated time period. If you neglect your sciatic pain and do not seek immediate medical advice, then it will indeed be very difficult for you to recover from this condition.

Having a clear idea about the facts of sciatic pain can definitely assist you in identifying the causes of your sciatic pain:

Back problems are sometimes responsible for giving rise to a condition which is commonly referred as sciatica.

Due to bulging or herniated disc, sciatic nerve get compressed which ultimately leads to sciatic pain.

Narrowing of spinal canal can also cause pressure on your sciatica nerve; this condition is called spinal stenosis.

With age, your body ligaments can thicken and spur can develop on the bones.

Thus as you grow, chances of you suffering from sciatica pain increase.

You can also do some specific exercises that are specially designed for sciatica pain. These exercises will surely give you some respite from sciatic pain.

There are various books written on sciatic pain which can provide valuable information about sciatic pain. You can use these books in order to know more about the facts of sciatic pain.

Facts About Sciatic Pain is a post from: Back Pain and Physical Therapy Guide

Sciatic Pain and Piriformis Syndrome

Sciatica

MRI

Orthopedist

Piriformis Muscle

Piriformis Syndrome

Sciatic Nerve

Since Piriformis syndrome is a pain in the sciatic nerve, sciatic pain and Piriformis Syndrome are fairly similar diseases. Piriformis syndrome is a condition in which piriformis muscle irritates sciatic nerve, causing severe pain in back which can then spread to the back of leg and eventually to the foot. Mostly this disease is common in women and in some cases among athletes such as marathon walkers and runners.

While learning about sciatic pain and Piriformis Syndrome on internet, you may come across the information about the piriformis muscle. It is a small muscle positioned deep in the back, behind gluteus maximums. The piriformis muscle begins at the lower backbone and links to the upper surface of each thighbone. It works to help in turning the hip and runs with the sciatic nerve running vertically straight under it.

The pain of piriformis syndrome can increase if the piriformis muscle is stretched or if it puts pressure on sciatic nerve, which lies just below it. The stress on sciatic nerve can give rise to low back pain or pain that spreads out in the rear and along the leg. Generally, this pain is similar to sciatic pain. Although piriformis syndrome cannot cause actual sciatic pain, it can generate soreness, numbness or itchy with the sciatic nerve that runs along the back of the leg into the foot.

If you are suffering from sciatic pain and Piriformis Syndrome, your orthopedist will advise you to perform some of the stretching exercises to get rid of it:

Stretching the piriformis muscle is one of the most helpful exercises to get rid of the pain along the sciatic nerve and you can do it in several dissimilar poses.

A number of exercises can be done to reduce the painful symptoms of sciatic nerve.

The stretching exercises can help you to boost your hamstring muscles, piriformis muscles and hip extensor muscle.

The diagnosis of Piriformis syndrome is usually based on the signs and some laboratory tests. There are no specific tests to confirm the diagnosis perfectly. However, MRI, X-rays or nerve condition tests may be essential if the pain is severe. These tests are also helpful to rule out the possibility of other diseases.

The physical therapy can help break the series of spasm and soreness with several stretching exercises. Sometimes, physical therapy can be aided with local painkillers or by giving steroid injections directly to the affected area. Generally, there is no need of surgery for treating Piriformis. However, surgery is the sole alternative left to the patient after all conventional care techniques have been used in vain.

If you are suffering from Piriformis syndrome, you should avoid bicycling, running or doing activities that can cause pain. If your pain is aggravated due to sitting, standing up immediately, then you may change your sitting position if you are unable to stand up. In this way, you can try one of the physical therapies to get rid of sciatic pain and Piriformis Syndrome. However, physical therapy should only be practiced under the guidance of an expert trainer.

Sciatic Pain and Piriformis Syndrome is a post from: Back Pain and Physical Therapy Guide

Sciatic Pain During Pregnancy

Sciatica

Baby

Overweight

Pregnancy

Sciatic Nerve

Sciatic Pain

stress

Women

Sciatic Pain during pregnancy is not necessarily a common condition experienced by every pregnant woman. Although it is not totally pregnancy related condition, sciatic pain may affect many women during their pregnancy period.

The sciatic nerve is one of the longest nerves in the human body and it runs from the lower rear to the back of legs and feet. This nerve generates sensation in the muscles of legs and feet. Sometimes this sciatic nerve may become irritated due to damage or stress in the back. In such situation, sciatic pain may arise. Sometimes constant stress to the sciatic nerve may cause numbness, weakness in the leg or itchy feeling. Some women experience this feeling that is similar to the sensation that one gets by pricking of needles and pins to your leg.

Stress on a sciatic nerve during pregnancy can lead to many discomforts like back pain and more. Some women consider that the baby may put pressure on the sciatic nerve that may cause pain. However, this is not convinced, because most often sciatic pain during pregnancy happens due to damage to the disc in backbone. This may cause swelling in the tissues neighboring the nerve or can result in direct stress to the nerve. The disc injury is mostly possible in the women who are pregnant and overweight.

The sciatic pain in women can develop at any moment, irrespective of they are pregnant or not. In some cases, it can be co-occurrence that they experience ache and uneasiness during their pregnancy. The sciatic pain in some women can happen in their rear and leg and they will experience ache or itchy in that portion, while some women may just feel uneasiness in one or other area of their body. In some cases, pelvic pain during pregnancy can be misidentified as sciatic pain.

The typical symptoms of Sciatic Pain during pregnancy are:

* Burning in the buttock, leg or lower rear,
* Needles and pins in the leg or lower back and affected foot
* Numbness in the leg or feet
* Pain in the back of pelvis which may spread into the foot.

Mostly, sciatic pain disappears without any medical treatment. But sometimes this pain can last for up to six weeks or more. It is better to take basic treatment for Sciatic Pain during pregnancy regularly, as it can be helpful to reduce some of the symptoms. Manual therapy is one of the best treatments to reduce stress and uneasiness related with pregnancy rear pain.

Your therapist can suggest a list of helpful exercises to recover your health, support the abdominal muscles, back muscles and the pelvic floor muscles. The exercises can be also helpful for a trouble-free delivery and post delivery life.

Chiropractic care is also a helpful treatment for Sciatic Pain during pregnancy. However, while choosing this option, ensure that chiropractor is well skilled and experienced in working with parental patients. Massage therapy is also useful for relieving swelling and symptoms related with sciatic. You can choose one of the therapies that are most convenient for your health.

Sciatic Pain During Pregnancy is a post from: Back Pain and Physical Therapy Guide

Sciatic Pain Of Legs

Sciatica

Chiropractic

Piriformis Syndrome

Sciatic Pain

Spondylolisthesis

Sprains

Sciatic pain of the legs is characterized by the pain that occurs down the leg and is caused by the inflammation of the sciatic nerve. Sciatic pain usually starts in the back and extends down the legs. This is a common condition resulting from acute nerve compression. The reason for nerve compression may be slipped/prolapsed disk, muscle tension (Piriformis syndrome) and some less common reasons such as bony growths, tumors and infections.

Sciatic pain of legs may range from mild to severe and categorized as acute and chronic, as follows:

Acute sciatic pain is generally associated with soft tissue injury such as sprains of muscles, ligaments, or tendons or disc herniation. Acute pain generally cures within several days to weeks and its severity is directly associated with the extent of tissue injury. Since the source of pain may be the spinal joints, vertebrae, discs or soft tissues, it is generally called as acute mechanical back pain.

Chronic sciatic pain may persist for more than 3 months. It may be present all the time and may worsen with poor posture, certain activities and improper body mechanics. Other contributing factors may be related to arthritic changes, tissue scarring, nerve cell changes or psychological effects of chronic pain.

There are several causes of sciatic pain of legs. Slipped disc, which is referred as a herniated nucleus pulposus or prolapsed intervertebral disc, is one of the most common causes. Other causes of sciatic pain are:

Narrowing of the spinal canal in the lower back (lumbar spinal stenosis)

Degenerative disc disease such as osteoarthritis that causes breakdown of discs that act as a cushion between the vertebrae

Spondylolisthesis

Other possible reasons that may give rise to sciatic pain are overweight, wearing high heels, lack of regular exercise and sleeping on too soft mattress.

Main symptoms of sciatic pain of legs are related to the pain in low back, buttock, thigh, knee and foot. In some cases, pain may be severe and unbearable while in some people, it may be irritating and infrequent, but possibly may worsen. Some common symptoms of sciatic pain are:

Pain the leg or rear that may worsen when sitting, tingling or burning down the leg.

People with sciatic pain may experience numbness, weakness in leg or difficulty in moving foot or leg.

A shooting pain in the leg makes it difficult for the patient to stand up.

The sciatic pain extends from the lower back through the back of the thigh and then down through the leg. The foot or toes are also involved depending on the site where sciatic nerve is affected.

A careful medical examination is required to determine the type of spin problem and its cause to decide the appropriate treatment option. Diagnosis of sciatic pain of legs features a combination of physical examination, medical history of the patient and certain diagnostic tests such as x-ray, CT and MRI scan, Discogramn and Myelogram.

The treatment options include self-care, physical therapy, exercise, massage, traction, ultra-sound, acupuncture and chiropractic manipulation.
